These warm-blooded vertebrates have feathered covered bodies, give birth to egg-bound young and have two limbs that are modified as wings, aiding in flight. Although not all birds fly (such as Ostriches, Rheas, and Emus), all birds descended from flying ancestors. They're now known to be the only living descendants of dinosaurs.

There are over 8,700 living species of birds that are distributed throughout parts of the world. They occupy nearly all habitats and range in size from the 2.5" Hummingbirds to the Wandering Albatross with a wingspan of 11.5'.

Birds have light weight bones with large airy canals within them, so as not to inhibit flight. The skull has a relatively large cranium, and unlike mammals, both the upper and lower jaws move when the bird opens its mouth. The large eye has a strengthening ring on bony plates within it.
