Cape Bufffalo Skull
The cape buffalo is one of the largest wild bovids on the plains of Africa. This animal is one of the most successful of Africa's wild ruminants and thrives in virtually all types of grassland habitat in sub-Saharan Africa, from dry savanna to swamp and from lowland floodplains to mixed forest. The horns on these animals are used for defense against Africa's big predators such as lions. This skull exhibits a slight chip to the premaxilary bone, and some chipping of horns close to the skull. Cape buffalo skulls are a very rare species found for sale at Skulls Unlimited. Please see photos for details. Call with any questions.
Dinictis, often called the false saber-toothed cat is actually a member of the family Nimravidae. Dinictis lived on the plains of North America 35-40 m.y.a. Ancestors to modern cats, this ancient skull is reminiscent of today's clouded leopard skull (BC-005). About the size of today's cougar, Dinictis had short, powerful legs and a long tail. Unlike extant felines, which walk on their toes, they were more flat-footed. The canines are elongated as with the later occurring saber-toothed cats but not as pronounced.
