| Dodo Skull. The dodo, now extinct, once inhabited the small island of Mauritius, located near Madagascar. This large flightless bird was easy prey for mariners and colonist as a food source. Over hunting coupled with the introduction of domestic dogs, cats and pigs lead to the dodo's extinction in 1681. The dodo's name comes from the early Dutch and Portuguese who visited Mauritius who referred to it as sluggish and foolish in appearance. |
