This order Galliformes has four families, around 70 genera and close to 260 species. Short bills, strong legs and well developed tails are the trademarks of the birds in this order. They have short and rounded wings that are poorly adapted for sustained flight. Their feet are relatively heavy and well adapted for scratching the ground and running. They exist on seeds, leaves, fruit and buds, and some invertebrates. Most of the species are ground nesting. Some members of the order Galliformes, such as chickens, peafowl and guinea fowl, have been domesticated for over 5,000 years. All Galliformes are members of the class Aves or Birds.
