Hawaiian Monk Seal Skull - The Hawaiian monk seal inhabits several small northwestern islands in the Hawaiian chain. This species is primarily nocturnal, spending much of their days basking on beaches. Hawaiian monk seals feed on various reef-dwelling invertebrates and fish. This species' docile nature made it an easy food source for early explorers and inhabitants and has lead to its decline. It is estimated that as few as 1000 - 1200 individuals remain in the wild. |
