SKULLS UNLIMITED INTERNATIONAL NEWS |
Wayward Hippo Skull Makes the News: Skulls Unlimited recently made local news when a hippo skull, shipped by Skulls Unlimited from a Tucson Fossil Show to Hawaii, ended up back in Oklahoma at a lumberyard in Chickasha. The owners of the lumberyard had no idea where the specimen originated or why they received it. Apparently the wayward hippo was quite the attraction for several days when locals flocked from miles around to have their photo taken with the skull. Several local television stations and newspapers reported the strange specimen, which prompted one reported to contact Skulls Unlimited, thus solving the mystery. The skull has now been returned to Skulls Unlimited and is currently available for sale on our one of a kind page. http://www.skullsunlimited.com/seasonal_sales.html

Peruvian Elongated and Trephined Skulls
Dated over 2000 years old, these grossly deformed skulls originate from the Paracas region of Peru. The practice of head binding to create an elongated skull and trephination date back nearly 9000 years. Trephination was the surgical process of removing a section of skull. This is thought to have been performed to relieve pressure caused by the binding process or to allow access to the brain.

Homo floresiensis Skull
Discovered in 2003 on the island of Flores, Indonesia, this skull represents a small hominid that grew no larger than a modern child 3' (1 m). H. floresiensis lived in isolation with dwarf elephants and komodo dragons. Evolutionary island isolation tends to either make a species dwarf or grow giant depending on various factors. Dated at 18,000 years old, this specimen is thought to be a previously unknown lineage of human ancestry.
