SKULLS UNLIMITED INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Prehistoric Project at Skulls Unlimited

Recently, Skulls Unlimited was commissioned to assemble a cast mastodon skeleton. When complete, the massive skeleton will be displayed at Science Central in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Ann Fumarolo of Science Central says; "The skeleton was found in the summer of 1999 in a peat bog owned by the Buesching family in northwest Allen County, Indiana. students and faculty from Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne excavated the site. The bones were then sent to the University of Michigan for research." The skeleton was affectionately named Fred after grandfather Buesching. Ann continues; "Fred appears to be a wonderful find since he is one of the most complete and one of the largest mastodons ever unearthed. Dr. Dan Fischer at the University of Michigan has been able to determine that Fred likely died while vying for a female. Due to cuts on some of the bones, it is also evident that Fred was used as a food source for humans." The Buesching family donated Fred to be used for educational purposes. Two casts were made, one for the University of Michigan and one for display at Science Central. A final home for the real bones is being selected. After Fred leaves Skulls Unlimited, he will take his place in a new permanent exhibit at Science Central which will open early 2007.

Progress is continuing, albeit, slowly, towards the building of the second phase of the Museum of Osteology. Framing and support for the second level mezzanine balcony is in place, but has been slowed due to a number of unforeseen events including; city inspections, contractor's schedules and lack of materials due to last years hurricanes. We will continue with more updates next month.
