MUSEUM OF OSTEOLOGY UPDATE

Construction has begun on the second phase of the museum including an internal mezzanine balcony, second level classroom, elevator and architecture to suspend an articulated humpback whale skeleton. With luck, this second phase should be complete by summer 2006. The third and final phase, including display construction and exhibit design, will immediately follow. The photo on the right is one of the temporary storage areas for some of the museum's marine mammal collection. This assortment only represents 1/4th of the museum's marine mammal holdings.

Narwhal Skull Replica
The narwhal is found in the extreme northern Atlantic and Arctic oceans. This species possess a long spiral tooth that projects like a horn and can reach a length of 9 feet (3m) in males. During the middle ages, the tusk of the narwhal was considered proof of the existence of the unicorn. This species lacks functional teeth for feeding but uses a suck and gulp technique to dine on shrimp, squid and fish.

Hooded Seal Skull Replica
The hooded seal is named for the males inflatable nasal bladder used to attract mates. This species is solitary except during the breeding season. Hooded seals feed on various fish including cod and halibut as well as squid. Female hooded seals nurse their pups for only four days. During this time, the pups can double their birth weight from 25 lbs. to 50 lbs.

Margay Skull Replica
The margay, native to Central and South America, is a small spotted cat slightly larger than a housecat. This species is crepuscular, meaning that they are active during the day and night. The margay uses its climbing skills to prey on many tree dwelling species including various birds, reptiles, small mammals and insects. This species will also feed on various fruits when available.

Hammerhead Bat Skull
This month’s featured item is a new product for Skulls Unlimited. The Hammerhead Bat Skull, Hypsignathus monstrosus. These natural bone skulls have a fascinating shape to them making them unique among fruit bat skulls. The hammerhead bat, native to the rainforests of central Africa, is the largest of the African bats. The male of this strange looking species possess a large inflated snout, providing its name. Hammerhead bats are primarily fruit eaters that specialize in figs and other soft fruits, but have also been known to prey on small birds and mammals. This species is in limited supply and will sell out fast. We will gladly take back orders when our supply is exhausted.
