2007 Catalog Coming Together
The crew at Skulls Unlimited is currently putting the finishing touches on the 2007 Catalog. It was decided this year that the Skulls Unlimited staff would take over much of the laborious duties of planning, photographing and putting the catalog together. An outside design company was hired to design the new look and cover, but all other work has been performed by the staff...which was not an easy task. Jay Villemarette, Skulls Unlimited owner says; "It just made sense to do the bulk of the work in house. Why bother putting all the info together, double checking the spellings, taxonomy, prices, etc., just to hand it to someone else to type in." Jay has long been an avid amateur digital photographer. In fact, most of the photos on the Skulls Unlimited website are his. In addition, Jay has been working on a book (see article below) as a side project and has become very familiar with the publishing program InDesign. Jay's familiarity with both of these areas allowed him to control much of the development of the catalog. Jay says; "Our goal is to have this catalog ready to ship during the first few weeks of January and to have it available at all of our 2007 conferences...and it seems we are right on track." More Press for Skulls Unlimited
Since the November newsletter, the media interest in Skulls Unlimited has continued. Oklahoma City's Fox 25 News has developed a new feature in the spirit (and name) of Discovery Channel's Dirty Jobs. Host, Suna Syed, accompanied Jay through some of the dirty steps of the Skulls Unlimited's cleaning process. Click here to see the video (not for the squeamish).
Additionally, Jay gave an interview to 97.1 WKRK Detroit, MI. describing Skulls Unlimited, what we do and how he got started. To listen to this interview, click here.

For the past five years, Skulls Unlimited owner, Jay Villemarette has been diligently working on his book, Mammal Skulls of North America; A Photographic Guide. Jay's book will feature over 400 digitally photographed, full color skull plates of the mammal species found north of Mexico. Jay's book will include basic species information, but primarily will focus on the photography, making this one of the most comprehensive skull pictorial guides available. Jay says; "I still have to travel to photograph some hard to find specimens, such as a few of the great whales held at the Smithsonian, but over 75% of the specimens already reside in the collections of the Museum of Osteology." With Jay's commitments to his business and family, this book has not proven to be a quick undertaking. |
| Nonetheless, Jay says he intends to have his book completed and ready for printing within the next year. Once completed, Mammal Skulls of North America will be available through Skulls Unlimited as well as other retail book dealers. |
