MUSEUM OF OSTEOLOGY UPDATE |
|
In all our travels we are most often asked; "Have you guys put that whale I saw on Dirty Jobs together yet?" Well, finally, after two years of preparation and planning, we have begun the articulation of our humpback whale skeleton. This 40-foot specimen will be the centerpiece of the museum. Weighing over 2000 lbs, this huge skeleton has proven no easy task to assemble. However, with our crew working full time, we expect to have this specimen articulated and finished within 2 weeks. To view a partial time-lapse video of the progress, click here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyFT7ajaFqg
In addition to the whale, we have been steadily working on other exhibits as well. Below is a collection of photos of a few of these. Check out or Winter newsletter for photos of the finished whale skeleton as well as other museum updates

MYTHICAL PROJECT |
|
Although Skulls Unlimited generally articulates species that actually exist, we are sometimes asked to create custom skeletal mounts. Recently, we were commissioned to create a centaur skeleton. Created using the torso of a real human skeleton and melding it with the body of a horse, this mythical skeleton turned out to be an interesting and fun project. To see some of our other custom skeletal articulations, click the image above.

The Museum of Osteology Challenge is a chance for all of you skull enthusiasts to show off the size of your craniums. The Museum of Osteology, although not yet open to the public, houses a large collection of rare and unique skull specimens. Each issue, this newsletter will feature a new photograph of a specimen. The first three individuals that can correctly identify the pictured specimen will win one of our new Skulls Unlimited Est. in 1986 T-Shirts and have their names posted in the next newsletter. Winners will be the envy of all their skull collecting friends! This contest is open to all ages. Only one guess per individual, per issue will be accepted. Guesses must include the animal's common, genus and species names. (Example: Human, Homo sapiens) Entries lacking any of these will not be accepted. Deformed Calf Skull Bos taurus
This one of a kind domestic cattle calf was stillborn with a severe facial deformation. The whole front maxillary portion of the skull is split to the cranium. This split allowed the lower jaw to grow upward and fill the void. The specimen is lacking a cranial vault and would have left little or no space for a brain. We have never seen, or even heard of a specimen like this. This is truly a unique skull. Display Stand included.

Draft Horse and Miniature Horse Skull Set Equus caballus
This incredible set features two distinct breeds of domestic horse, a Belgian Draft Horse and a Miniature Horse. Belgians are among the largest of the domestic horse breeds and this specimen is no exception. It measures over 23.5" long and dwarfs a standard horse skull. The miniature horse skull measures just 13.5" and is one of the smallest horse skulls we have cleaned here at Skulls Unlimited. This is a rare opportunity to obtain both of these rare specimens for your collection. Draft horse has damage to the occipital condyle and worn incisors. Miniature horse skull has some minor repair to the cranium and right jugal.
