SKULLS UNLIMITED INTERNATIONAL NEWS

This month, due to excessive conference travel and other obligations that have kept us out of the office, we will be doubling up on our newsletter. So, sit back and enjoy this special July/August Newsletter. This newsletter can also be viewed at;

Skulls Unlimited "International"

This past June, Skulls Unlimited owner, Jay Villemarette, traveled to Quebec Canada to visit Le Musee du Squelette (Museum of the Skeleton). Owned and operated by Pierre-Henry Fontaine, this small museum is the highlight of Ile Vert (Green Island) located on the St. Lawrence River. Pierre began his museum about 10 years ago when he retired as a wildlife and biology instructor, but has been collecting skulls and bones for a great part of his life. Pierre, a world-renowned whale expert and author, has built a very nice and extremely educational museum. Ile Vert is a well-kept secret for the locals of Quebec. The lifestyle there is very laid back and peaceful just the way Pierre likes it. From the outside of Pierre's museum, apart from the sign and the parked fin whale skull, few people could imagine the wealth of specimens and knowledge that are held within. Jay and Pierre discussed many aspects of his museum as well as the future exhibits of Skulls Unlimited's Museum of Osteology. For those of you wishing to visit Le Musee du Squelette, the museum is open by appointment during the summer and early fall. Call 1-418-898-5215 to set up an appointment.

Also on his trip, Jay was able to meet with another Quebecois skull collector, Steeve Baker of Quebec City. Steeve, who often uses his collection while teaching biology at the College de Sainte-Foy, has been collecting skulls for 32 years and now houses over 1200 specimens representing 450 species. A very impressive collection to say the least.

A Whale of a Time at the Smithsonian

In an effort to obtain a few final cetacean skull photographs for his book, Jay Villemarette, along with Joey Williams, traveled to the Smithsonian Institute's Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. after all, it's not everyone that has a 19 foot tall blue whale skull laying around.

With the kind permission of Dr. James Mead, Marine Mammal Curator, and with the generous help of Charley Potter, Marine Mammal Collections Manager, Jay and Joey were able to get behind the scenes access to photograph eight species of cetacean skulls needed for Jay's book, The Mammal Skulls of North America; A Pictorial Guide. It was quite the experience for these two skull junkies.

MUSEUM OF OSTEOLOGY CHALLENGE

The Museum of Osteology Challenge is a chance for all of you skull enthusiasts to show off the size of your craniums. The Museum of Osteology, although not yet open to the public, houses a large collection of rare and unique skull specimens. Each month, this newsletter will feature a new photograph of a specimen. The first three individuals that can correctly identify the pictured specimen will win one of our new Skulls Unlimited Est. in 1986 T-Shirts and have their names posted in the next newsletter. Winners will be the envy of all their skull collecting friends! This contest is open to all ages. Only one guess per individual, per month will be accepted. Guesses must include the animal's common, genus and species names. (Example: Human, Homo sapiens) Entries lacking any of these will not be accepted. Email your answers to: education@skullsunlimited.com

Last month's mystery skull proved so difficult that nobody, that's right, nobody was able to correctly identify it. Since it seems we stumped everyone, this month we are providing one more clue that is sure to solidify this specimen's identity. Good luck!

This month's mystery skull still measures 3.8 inches (9.6cm) long.

Last month's hint: The scientific name of this species does not contain the letter "G".

This month's hint: Lat. 18 degrees 55 minutes South, Long. 47 degrees 31 minutes East.

Argali Sheep Skulls

These magnificent replicas were cast from some of the largest Argali skulls on record. Argali sheep are some of the world's largest sheep. Some authors recognize up to nine subspecies of Argali. Two of the largest and most well know are the Marco Polo (Ovis ammon polii) and the Altai Argali (Ovis ammon ammon). The Altai subspecies is the largest of all sheep and possess the heaviest horns. The Marco Polo subspecies is particularly known for its long horns. The longest recorded Marco Polo horns measured 75" (191 cm). Both of these original specimens reside in the Museum of Osteology.

Australopithecus boisei

This 1.7 million year old female skull, KNM ER 732, was discovered in 1970 at Koobi Fora, Kenya by R. Leakey and H. Mutua.
