MUSEUM OF OSTEOLOGY UPDATE WHALE SKELETON: PART 2 |
|
As mentioned in our previous newsletter, we began the articulation and hanging of our 40-foot humpback whale skeleton last December. Although it took slightly longer than expected, we now have our humpback articulated and installed in the Museum of Osteology. Additionally, KFOR News, here in Oklahoma City, also came out and filmed the final throws of this project. To view this story, click here; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peKYw98R8qM

SKULLS UNLIMITED ON "TATTOO HIGHWAY" |
Jay Villemarette, Thomas Pendelton, and Joey Williams
Back in April, 2007, Skulls Unlimited was visited by tattoo artist, Thomas Pendelton. Thomas, his wife Monica and their friends were embarking on a cross-country trek, complete with a film crew, to tattoo and promote their clothing line, The Ministry of Ink. Now, after 2 years of filming, post-production and waiting, Tattoo Highway is set to air on May 27th on A&E. The NY Daily News had the following to say about this upcoming show.
Moving pictures: 'Tattoo Highway' artist hits the road

Former 'Inked' cast member Thomas Pendelton is returning to TV in a show of his own. Pendelton and his wife, Monica, will star in "Tattoo Highway," an A&E series in which they travel the country in their mobile tattoo parlor, "Ministry of Ink." Inside a 1970s tour bus decked out with top-of-the-line equipment, the two make their way from Las Vegas to Los Angeles to Phoenix and beyond, creating body art.
"From the creation of the art to the environment that I tattooed in, it has always been about my customers' experience," Pendelton said in a statement released yesterday. "In a street shop, it was easy to forget just how personal that experience should be. Rolling up and parking the shop right in the middle of someone's life, well, there is nothing more personal than that."
The tattoos viewers will see Pendelton create this season include a memorial portrait created from the ashes of a man's wife mixed with ink; a tattoo that can only be seen under a black light; a giant gorilla riding a scooter, and a pair of matching eggplants.
"Tattoo Highway" will premiere this spring.
Pendelton, a 15-year tattoo veteran, was Carey Hart's business partner on "Inked," which chronicled events at Hart & Huntington Tattoo Co., the first tattoo company to open in a casino. Monica also appeared on that series.
Executive producer Bob Horowitz said the traveling element of "Tattoo Highway" is what will separate it from similar reality series, including "Miami Ink."
"All the other series have been based in tattoo parlors," Horowitz told the Hollywood Reporter. "Here the premise is this is the first tattoo parlor on wheels, and he goes where the stories are. Imagine all the things that can happen when you take something like this on the road and all the things that can happen."
A&E has ordered 13 episodes of "Highway Tattoo."
On their visit to Skulls Unlimited, Thomas and his entourage bought a few skulls, received a special behind-the-scenes tour and gave owner, Jay Villemarette, a fantastic gorilla skull tattoo. Be sure to watch Skulls Unlimited on "Tattoo Highway", premiering May 27th on A&E.

SKULL IDENTIFICATION |
|
Over the years, we have received many, many emails requesting help identifying skulls, skeletons or various bone elements. It seems that most of the specimens we identify are found on various beaches worldwide. More often than not, they end up being partial fish craniums or bird pelvi. Fish craniums are often mistaken for sea turtle or bird skulls. As most fish skulls are kinetic (flexible) to allow for feeding and an aquatic existence, they tend to disarticulate, or fall a part, when they decompose. This usually leaves only the cranium portion of the skull behind. Bird pelvi also tend to resemble skulls to the untrained eye. The hip femur sockets can look like eye sockets and the sacrum, a cranium. However, not all of the photos of specimens sent to us turn out to be fish or bird parts. We actually have seen some pretty interesting specimens and are always glad to be of help. In fact, if you or someone you know, has a skull you would like to have identified, give us a shot. Just send us a photo, and any other information about the specimen you might have, via email to education@skullsunlimited.com and we will do our best to identify your skull for you. Below are a few images of specimens that have been sent to us over the years.
