| Raccoon Dog Skull - Raccoon dogs are omnivorous, and as their name implies, appear very similar in appearance to raccoons. Raccoon dogs maintain home ranges which vary in size depending on location. Home range area can range anywhere from 104 square kilometers on some islands to 20 square kilometers in parts of Russia. The boundaries of these ranges are marked by latrine sites where individuals regularly deposit feces. The animals are not known to be territorial as numerous individuals have been found to overlap parts of their home ranges. The animals are usually found in pairs, which suggests monogamy. The species has a few attributes that are unique among canids. This is the only species, for example, that undergoes a "winter sleep." This is similar to hibernation, except the animals are easier to awaken. It is also the only canid that does not bark. |
