Fossil Giant Armadillos
Classified in the order Cingulata, the family Pampatheriidae is an extinct family of large armadillos. Pampatheres evolved in South America during its long period of Cenozoic isolation. Some pampatheres migrated to North America after the formation of the Isthmus of Panama. Along with most other megafauna, all pampatheres disappeared at the end of the Pleistocene epoch.
