Sphenodontidae is the family containing two living species of tuatara as well as a number of extinct species. This group of primitive lizard-like reptiles that date back to the Mesozoic Era. Tuataras, native to New Zealand and its surrounding islands, are threatened by habitat loss and introduced predators such as rats. Tuatara have been classified as an endangered species since 1895.
