The family Solenodontidae includes only two living solenodon species, the Cuban and the Haitian solenodon. These primitive mammals represent the last of an ancient line that evolved nearly 70 million years ago, near the end of the time of the dinosaurs. Solenodons resemble large shrews, and like some shrews, are one of the few venomous mammals.
