Sphenacodontidae is an extinct family of primitive synapsid pelycosaurs. Although often mistakenly lumped with the dinosaurs, these large reptiles were one of the dominant predators of the Late Pennsylvanian to middle Permian era. The skull is long, deep and narrow, an adaptation for strong jaw muscles. The front teeth are large and dagger-like, whereas the teeth in the sides and rear of the jaw are much smaller The family Sphenacodontidae constitutes an evolutionary gradation from primitive synapsid to early therapsid.
