The Archaeopterygidae is a group of early birds that lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. This family includes one of the best known and earliest birds, Archaeopteryx. Members of Archaeopterygidae are distinguished from other early birds by long bony tails, and in some species, by the presence of a hyperextendible second toe.
