The family Lepisosteidae consists of seven freshwater gar. This ancient order of "primitive" ray-finned fish have elongated, heavily armored bodies covered with tough scales. Additionally, gar possess elongated jaws filled with needle-like teeth. All gar inhabit fresh, brackish, and occasionally marine, waters of eastern North America, Central America, and the Caribbean islands.
