Hammerhead Shark

Sphyrna sp.

The hammerhead shark get its name from the unusual and distinctive “hammer” shape of their heads. This shark’s unique head shape, called a cephalofoil, is believed to be an adaptation for sensory reception, maneuvering, and prey manipulation. Hammerheads are found worldwide in warmer waters along coastlines and continental shelves. All hammerhead sharks are members of the family Sphyrnidae.
