| Subantarctic Fur Seal Skull - The Subantarctic fur seal, as its name suggests, is native to the Antarctic subcontinent, although breeding colonies can be found in the south Pacific and Indian oceans. Once heavily over hunted for its pelt, this endangered species has made a remarkable recovery from several hundred individuals to nearly a million today. Like many members of the Otariidae family, this species exhibits extreme sexual dimorphism with adult males reaching more than twice the size and weight of adult females. Subantarctic fur seals are carnivorous feeding exclusively on fish. |
