The common eland is the world's second largest antelope, found in savannas and plains of eastern and southern Africa. Elands are herbivores and feed on high-protein plant material such as succulent leaves. They obtain most of their water from the foods they eat. Elands are gregarious, forming herds of up to 500. The eland is the slowest species of antelope with a peak speed of about 25 mph (40 km/h), which tires them quickly.
