The thirteen-lined ground squirrel is a small rodent belonging to the family Sciuridae. It is characterized by its distinctive pattern of thirteen stripes running along its back, alternating between dark and light colors. Thirteen-lined ground squirrels inhabit grasslands and prairies throughout central North America, where they dig burrows for shelter and protection. They are omnivorous, feeding on a diet consisting mainly of seeds, nuts, insects, and small vertebrates.
