Australopithecus afarensis, "Lucy" A.L. 288-1, jaw KO-036-J. Discovered by Donald Johanson in 1974 in Ethiopia. "Lucy", at 3.2 million years has been considered the first human ancestor. This is now being challenged by the discovery of Kenyanthropus, described in 2001 by Leakey. Reconstruction based on photos, descriptions and casts of original bones.
