Abert's squirrel, or tassel-eared squirrel, is a tree squirrel found in forested regions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. This species is named in honor of the American naturalist and military officer Colonel John James Abert, who organized the effort to map the American West in the 19th century. Abert's squirrels are most recognizable by their tufted ears. Their favorite food comes from the ponderosa pine tree, of which they consume its seeds, inner bark, buds, and pollen cones. They also sometimes feed on fungi, carrion, bones, and antlers.
