Greyhounds are coursing hounds bred for speed and originally used in ancient Egypt to run down and capture prey. With their long legs, narrow-body, aerodynamic skull, and powerful legs they are the fastest breed, and as such, ideal for racing. Greyhounds can reach speeds of up to 40mph! The AKC recognized the breed in 1885, and since then they have been a popular choice for a family pet due to their strikingly beautiful appearance and gentle, sweet temperaments.
