The Steppe bison is an extinct species closely related to modern plains and woods bison. These ancient bison roamed North America in large numbers until approximately 11,000 years ago. While similarly proportionate to extant bison in body size, the Steppe bison possessed much larger horns and more robust legs than their modern-day counterparts. Many fully-preserved Steppe bison specimens have been discovered in the 20 th and 21st centuries, the most famous being “Blue Babe”, whose fully-preserved 36,000-year-old carcass was discovered in a gold mine in Alaska in 1979.
