The life cycle of a frog undergoes a fascinating process called metamorphosis, consisting of distinct stages:
1. Egg Stage (Spawn): The life cycle begins when adult female frogs lay clusters of eggs in water, usually in ponds or streams. These eggs are laid in gelatinous masses known as spawn.
2. Tadpole Stage: From the eggs hatch tadpoles, aquatic larvae with gills and a fish-like tail. Tadpoles primarily feed on algae and plant matter in the water. As the tadpole grows, it undergoes a remarkable transformation. Limbs develop, the tail shortens, and lungs form. This process, known as metamorphosis, prepares the tadpole for life on land.
4. Juvenile Frog: Once metamorphosis is complete, the tadpole has transformed into a juvenile frog. At this stage, the young frog begins to explore the land and adapts to a more terrestrial lifestyle.
5. Adult Frog: The juvenile frog continues to grow, and over time, it reaches full adulthood. Adult frogs are adapted for both terrestrial and aquatic life, possessing lungs for breathing air and moist skin for absorbing oxygen in water.
Frogs play essential roles in ecosystems by controlling insect populations and serving as both predator and prey. The life cycle of a frog reflects its adaptation to diverse habitats, alternating between aquatic and terrestrial environments throughout its development.
