A newt is a salamander in the family Salamandridae. Not all aquatic salamanders are newts. Newts look very similar to lizards and they are semiaquatic, which means they spend part of the year in the water to reproduce and then the rest of the year on land. They can be found in North America, Europe, North Africa, and Asia with more than 100 known species that inhabit these areas. Many newts have skin that will secrete toxins as a defense mechanism but it is only harmful if ingested by the attacker.
