The western spotted skunk is omnivorous and will eat small rodents, fruits, berries, birds, eggs, insects, larvae, lizards, snakes, and carrion. Their diet may vary with the seasons as food availability fluctuates. They have a keen sense of smell that helps them find grubs and other food. Their hearing is acute but they have poor vision.
***The frontal bones of spotted skunks are most often eroded by a nasal parasite (Skrajabingylus chitwoodorum) resulting in open lesions or gross deformation of the frontal region. This is unavoidable and therefore skulls with this malformation are still considered first quality.***
