An excellent example of an approximately 6-year-old skull. All the deciduous (baby teeth) are present in the upper and lower jaws. The alveolar bone overlying both maxillae and mandible has been dissected away, revealing deciduous tooth root morphology and development of permanent dentition. The anterior, posterior, sphenoidal and mastoidal fontanelles are all closed. The spheno-occipital synchondrosis and the calvarial sutures are open. By removing the calotte of this skull, osteologists can learn the complex anatomy of the endocranium. It is not currently possible to reliably determine sex with child remains. This serves as an exceptional teaching model in the laboratory.
