This real aardwolf skull exhibits excellent preservation and provides valuable insight into the adaptations of a specialized termite-eating mammal. The delicate dentition and refined skull structure reflect the aardwolf's unique niche within the carnivoran order, making it an exceptional educational and display specimen for natural history collections and scientific study.
The aardwolf is the smallest member of the hyena family. This African species, whose name means "earth wolf" in Afrikaans, are most often classified in the family Hyaenidae, however, some scientists place the aardwolf in a family of its own called Protelidae. Unlike its larger carnivorous and scavenging cousins, the aardwolf is an insectivore and exists mainly on termites. Externally, aardwolves resemble hyenas, but their skull characteristics and dentition are different. For instance, an aardwolf's skull is much less robust than a hyena's, and because of their diet of insects, their teeth are smaller.
