The Australian Lungfish is a large freshwater fish native to the river systems of southeastern Queensland, Australia. Often regarded as a living fossil, it represents one of the most ancient surviving vertebrate lineages, with relatives dating back more than 100 million years. Unlike its African and South American counterparts, the Australian Lungfish relies primarily on its gills for respiration but can supplement its oxygen intake by breathing air with a single functional lung. It inhabits slow-moving rivers, reservoirs, and freshwater habitats where it feeds on a variety of plant material, invertebrates, and small aquatic animals. Its primitive anatomy and evolutionary significance make it an important species for understanding the origins of terrestrial vertebrates and the evolutionary history of lobe-finned fishes.
