The eastern diamondback rattlesnake is the largest venomous snake in North America. It lives in the pine flatwoods, sandhills and coastal scrub of the southeastern United States, and it is named for the bold row of dark diamonds outlined in cream that runs down its back. Its long, hinged fangs fold back against the roof of the mouth when it is at rest and swing forward when it strikes, and that hinge is easy to see on the skull.
