The Great Hammerhead Shark is the largest species of hammerhead shark, inhabiting tropical and warm temperate waters around the world. It is distinguished by its broad, nearly straight hammer-shaped head, known as a cephalofoil, which enhances sensory perception and maneuverability while hunting. An apex predator, the Great Hammerhead feeds on a variety of prey including fish, rays, smaller sharks, squid, and crustaceans. This powerful species is also recognized by its exceptionally tall, sickle-shaped first dorsal fin and can reach lengths exceeding 20 feet (6 meters). Despite its formidable size, populations have declined significantly due to overfishing and the shark fin trade, leading to its classification as a critically endangered species.
