We believe education is the greatest gift osteology can share and that every human specimen can contribute to the advancement of science. These specimens are provided to us by retired physicians, medical researchers, dental professionals, and former university medical programs. We also work with accredited donor programs. A small sample - often antiques that simply do not qualify for medical/research grade usage - are made available to osteology enthusiasts worldwide so that they may continue to educate and inform.
The patella, also known as the kneecap, is a thick, circular-triangular bone which articulates with the femur (thigh bone) and covers and protects the anterior articular surface of the knee joint. The patella is found in many tetrapods, such as mice, cats and birds, but not in whales or most reptiles. In humans, the patella is the largest sesamoid bone in the body. Babies are born with a patella of soft cartilage which begins to ossify into bone at about three years of age.

Just What I Wanted
Excellent experience. Delivery time was inaccurate initially but understandable these days.
Purchased for our kids science club. They were amazed to be holding a real human bone. Not a piece of plastic like most. Even the parents were happy to take a look at it.
This is such a stunning little piece! It arrived safe and sound, as always! This is the second patella in my collection and the natural variations are so, so very fascinating. The anticipation over what this one would be like had me bouncing with excitement until I got the package— I fell in love with it instantly and can’t pull myself away from studying it! The density of such a small bone is astounding, for starters; it’s only about 35mm by 40mm and weighs nearly 20 grams! Wild! The unique shape and uneven thickness is equally captivating, as is the diversity of surface textures. I could wax poetic all day, but I’ll leave it on this note: all in all, this patella is a fantastic specimen and I’m extremely pleased to add it to my collection. I’ve been buying human bone specimens from SUI for years now (guest checkout most often, I’d been too impatient to make an account until recently); they never fail to amaze!
