The Mesoamerican slider (Trachemys venusta) is a semi-aquatic turtle native to freshwater systems throughout Mexico, Central America, and parts of northern South America. It inhabits a variety of environments including rivers, ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams, often favoring areas with abundant vegetation and basking sites.
This species is an adaptable omnivore, feeding on aquatic plants, algae, insects, small fish, and carrion. Juveniles tend to consume more protein, while adults shift toward a more herbivorous diet. Like other sliders, it is known for its basking behavior, spending long periods out of the water to regulate body temperature.
