The American crocodile is found only in southern Florida and areas of Central and South America. This species can be found in brackish and salt water lagoons and water ways. The diet of this species is similar to other crocodilians consisting of crustaceans, fish and other small aquatic vertebrates. This species is now near extinction due to loss of habitat and hunting prior to its protection in 1975. It is estimated that there are fewer than 500 American crocodiles remaining in the wild.
