The black caiman ranges throughout most of the Amazon River basin of South America. This species can grow quite large, with recorded lengths of 20 feet (6 M), making it the largest predator in its range. The diet of this species primarily consists of fish and small vertebrates but larger individuals may take larger prey such as capybara.
