The cownose ray is a species of eagle ray found in the western Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of America, often seen swimming in large schools near coastal waters. It gets its name from the rounded, cow-like shape of its head, with lobes on either side that help funnel food into its mouth. Cownose rays feed mainly on mollusks and crustaceans, using their strong jaws to crush shells. Despite their size and appearance, they’re generally harmless to humans.
