Replica Dwarf Mammoth Jaw
Dwarf mammoths were smaller relatives of the larger mammoth species, adapted to live on isolated islands where resources were limited. They evolved from larger mammoth ancestors, gradually shrinking in size due to the phenomenon known as insular dwarfism. Notable examples include the pygmy mammoth from the Channel Islands of California and the woolly mammoth populations on Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean, which persisted until about 4,000 years ago, well after their larger mainland relatives had gone extinct.
