Emperor penguins are the largest penguin species, growing over 1.1 meters (3.6 feet) tall and weighing up to 40 kg (88 pounds) at the start of the breeding season. They are specially adapted to survive Antarctica’s extreme conditions, including temperatures below –50°C (–58°F) and powerful winds.
Their survival adaptations include dense, scale-like waterproof feathers, thick fat reserves for insulation, and a circulatory system that conserves heat by recycling warmth through closely positioned arteries and veins. Fat pads on their feet also help protect them from freezing on the ice. Emperor penguins are highly social and survive harsh winters by huddling together in large groups to share warmth, constantly rotating positions so each bird can warm up in the center.
In April 2026, emperor penguins were listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to climate change. The loss and early break-up of Antarctic sea ice threatens their breeding grounds and food supply, putting many colonies at risk of major population declines.
