Spina bifida is a common congenital disorder that affects the central nervous system, occurring in approximately 1 in 2,875 births in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This condition results from the incomplete closure of the neural tube, which is the embryonic precursor to the brain and spinal cord, during early pregnancy. When the neural arch does not fully develop around the spinal cord, it can lead to the spinal cord protruding through the vertebral opening, potentially causing lasting nerve damage. Individuals with spina bifida may experience motor deficits, weakness or paralysis in their legs and feet, and issues with bladder or bowel control. Although the exact causes of spina bifida are not fully understood, it is associated with chromosomal abnormalities, genetic factors, folate deficiency, and various maternal and environmental influences.
