The American opossum, more specifically the Virginia opossum, is the only marsupial native to North America. It’s known for its grayish fur, pointed snout, hairless tail, and ability to “play dead” when threatened—a defense behavior called thanatosis. Nocturnal and omnivorous, opossums eat everything from fruits and insects to small animals and carrion, playing a valuable role in pest control and ecosystem cleanup.
