Megantereon cultridens, including the subspecies Megantereon nihowanensis, was a prehistoric sabertooth cat that lived during the Pliocene and early Pleistocene. It was a powerful predator, slightly smaller than a modern tiger, with long, serrated canine teeth specialized for ambushing and taking down large prey. Fossils of Megantereon nihowanensis have been found in Asia, suggesting it was an important link in the evolution of later sabertooth cats like Smilodon. Its extinction is believed to be linked to environmental changes and competition with other large predators.
