The short-nosed echidna, native to Australia, Tasmania and New Guinea, is a primitive mammal belonging to the order Monotremata. This species, along with the 3 long-nosed echidnas and platypus, are the only egg-laying mammals alive today. Echidnas are insectivores and use their long sticky tongue to lap prey from its hole.
