Softshell turtles are a group of freshwater turtles known for their distinctive flat, leathery shells, unlike the hard, bony shells of most other turtles. These turtles are highly aquatic, spending most of their time buried in sand or mud at the bottom of rivers, lakes, and ponds, with only their eyes and snouts exposed. They are also noted for their strong swimming abilities and can breathe through their skin, allowing them to stay submerged for extended periods.
