Cicadas are insects known for their loud buzzing or clicking sounds. They have robust bodies, large eyes, and transparent wings, and are most commonly found in temperate and tropical regions around the world. Cicadas spend the majority of their lives underground as nymphs, feeding on tree roots, before emerging as adults to mate and lay eggs. Their distinctive calls are produced by specialized organs called tymbals located on the abdomen of males. Cicadas are known for their periodic mass emergences, known as "brood years," which occur at intervals of 13 or 17 years in some species.
