The river cooter is a species of aquatic turtle native to the southeastern United States. It is a large turtle, typically growing to a shell length of 11-14 inches. River cooters are omnivorous and feed on a variety of aquatic plants, insects, snails, crayfish, and carrion. They are primarily aquatic, but may leave the water to bask in the sun. River cooters are an important species in their ecosystems, providing food for larger predators, such as birds and mammals.
